Let’s talk about the debate.

Seeing these men on the stage again, four years on, I couldn’t help but think of my favorite Stoic mantra:

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”
— Heraclitus

Not the debate I’ve been posting clips from the last few weeks, between my State Senate opponent and myself. Of course, I mean the debate last night between President Biden and former president Trump.

There’s a mountain of analysis this morning about the debate. But something jumped out to me from that televised stage in Atlanta that was neither a loud lie or a quiet truth: The contest for US president might not be the most important vote we make this November.

In fact, if Biden and Trump made a convincing case for anything last night—excepting for the world’s worst hypothetical golf game—it’s this: The most important vote you cast this year might just be for your state and local representatives.

CONSIDER

  • When it comes to matters of foreign policy, immigration, and the enforcement of federal law, your vote for Biden or Trump is one in 155 million (based on 2020’s turnout).

  • When it comes to matters of the budget, making law, appointing judges, and declaring war, your vote for your Georgia congressperson is one in approximately 371,000 (in 2020, CD 7).

  • But when it comes to matters of your local economy, wages, healthcare access, reproductive freedom, housing costs, schooling, gun safety, criminal justice, foster care and adoption, gender equality, the exercise of your free speech, and so many more issues, you’re vote for your State House or State Senate is one in 35,000 or one in 101,000, respectively. (in 2020, HD 46 and SD 56).

That means your vote is worth 1,534x more for your State Senator and 4,429x more for your State House rep than for your president! And your voice only grows louder as you vote down the ballot—for school boards and county commissioners and sheriffs.

I came away from last night’s Presidential debate discouraged by the contest for the White House. But I also came away more emboldened than ever that the opportunities for our districts and for our state have a far more transformative and direct impact on our lives. And that a more balanced and bipartisan state legislature can insulate us from the worst of Washington—whatever your persuasion. Because we have so much more say in what happens in our hometowns than in we have in our homeland.

JD JORDAN FOR GEORGIA STATE SENATE DISTRICT 56

For anyone in East Cobb, Roswell, or Woodstock alarmed by the state’s escalating attacks on our bodies, our families, our doctors’ offices, our classrooms and libraries, even our polling places, I’m running for State Senate district 56 to fight for our freedoms and to deliver a better future for everyone in Georgia.

And unlike my opponent who’s spent 14 years rolling back our freedoms, failing to safeguard our kids, and gerrymandered his district to stay in office, I promise to bring everyone in the 56—regardless of ideology—the best possible constituent experience so you feel heard, valued, and supported. As we all deserve to be.

I’m running for the 56. Let’s make a better Georgia for all of us.
