The state of the state.

Kemp used his speech to emphasize the differences between Atlanta and Washington, without acknowledging the shared role both governments had in bringing new business and success to Georgia. Composition by JD Jordan.

On Thursday, a joint session of the Georgia Legislature met in the House Chamber to receive the governor’s annual State of the State address. In it, Kemp emphasized Georgia's accomplishments and policy initiatives while renewing his commitment to principles that—he says—distinguish our state’s approach from Washington’s.

  1. Contrast with Washington DC: Kemp highlighted differences between Georgia's achievements and perceived challenges in the nation's capital, criticizing runaway spending and partisanship in Congress.

  2. Economic Achievements: He touted Georgia's strong economy, job growth, and conservative fiscal management, mentioning a Triple-A bond rating, tax relief, and a plan for the largest state tax cut in history.

  3. Education: Kemp advocated for an all-encompassing approach to education, emphasizing options like public, private, homeschooling, and charter schools. He urged bipartisan collaboration to find the best path forward.

  4. School Safety: The governor proposed making school security funding permanent, allocating $104 million for enhancements. He stressed the importance of bipartisan support for keeping schools safe.

  5. Public Safety: Kemp expressed unwavering support for law enforcement, announcing pay raises for state law enforcement officers and urging completion of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center.

  6. Healthcare: He highlighted achievements in lowering insurance costs and expanding access through policies like the Patients First Act. Kemp proposed a significant increase in mental health funding to address various needs.

  7. State Employees: The governor proposed a 4% pay increase for all state employees, including teachers, and allocated $500 million to shore up the state retiree fund.

  8. Georgia's Unique Approach: Kemp emphasized Georgia's distinct principles, such as fiscal responsibility, tax cuts, support for law enforcement, and celebration of the free market. He called for maintaining the state's success and individual prosperity over government intervention.

JD JORDAN FOR GEORGIA STATE SENATE DISTRICT 56

For anyone in East Cobb, Roswell, or Woodstock alarmed by the state’s escalating attacks on our bodies, our families, our doctors’ offices, our classrooms and libraries, even our polling places, I’m running for state senate district 56 to fight for our freedoms and to deliver a better future for everyone in Georgia.

And unlike my opponent who’s spent 14 years rolling back our freedoms, failing to safeguard our kids, and gerrymandered his district to stay in office, I promise to bring everyone in the 56—regardless of ideology—the best possible constituent experience so you feel heard, valued, and supported. As we all deserve to be.

I’m running for the 56. Let’s make a better Georgia for all of us.
